4/5 Review: Midnight Hunter (The Execution Underground Book 3) by Kait Ballenger

Hunters of the supernatural, THE EXECUTION UNDERGROUND are an elite group tasked with protecting humanity…but can dark temptation destroy good intentions?

Occult specialist and witch hunter Dr. Shane Grey is called upon to investigate a string of crimes that bear all the hallmarks of black magic. But he can't take on this daunting assignment for the Execution Underground alone. He'll need the help of Vera Sanders, a witch with a dark past—and a woman who disturbs him as much as she intrigues him.

Vera is determined to ignore the dangerous chemistry between herself and Shane so she can prove her loyalty to his cause; otherwise she risks the wrath of the Execution Underground once again. If she can't make Shane trust her, they won't stand a chance in hell of defeating the evil that's terrorizing their city. No easy task, considering old habits die hard…and Vera may be the very person responsible for luring Shane into a killer's trap.

**********

Midnight Hunter by Kait Ballenger is a really good read!  Dr. Shane Grey works for The Execution Underground.  He isn’t usually out in the field but this case is for him.  He is an occult specialist and witch hunter.  He has to catch a warlock who is reanimating corpses.  These corpses are killing the last person who angered them.  Shane tries to get help from a witch that has a history of using dark magic.  Vera Sanders is a witch with an addiction to using dark magic.  She knows that she shouldn’t use it, but can’t help the need for the rush that it gives her.  When she is forced to help Shane find out who is reanimating the corpses she has a hard time hiding the fact that she has used dark magic recently.  Shane and Vera begin to have feelings for each other and need to fight the attraction, there are just too many secrets on both sides for them to trust each other completely.  Vera and Shane come into contact with a few of the corpses and have to work together to destroy them.  Incident after incident forces them together and it gets harder and harder to keep their secrets.  In fact keeping secrets get them into more trouble.  Shane lives with his aging grandmother who has Alzheimer’s.  When Vera sees the way he cares for her she warms up to him more and more.  As they continue to get to know each other their feelings become more dominant and need to be expressed.  Which is why it hurts when Shane finds out about Vera’s use of dark magic and who Shane’s father is.  As they battle for their lives they need to completely trust each other to survive.  I enjoyed this book.  I was part of the action as it happened and I loved Shane!  It was well written and the story was good.  I recommend it for paranormal lovers.
