What Lights My Fire?
People often hear writers talking about what inspires them and sparks their muse. For me the answer is music. I listen to instrumental music when I'm actually writing because I find lyrics too distracting and Pandora is a fantastic tool to help me find the right mix. If I’m writing a love scene I put on my New Age Instrumental channel, but if I'm writing a fight scene or a love scene I usually tune into Rock-n-Roll Instrumental.
Lyric based songs usually help me spark an idea or can bring a scene together. I find that a good deal of my writing process is thinking about what I'm going to write. When I'm driving alone in the car, it's a wonderful opportunity to let imagination run wild.
I've had a few ah-ha moments when listening to songs. For example, when I was writing Untouched (Amoveo Legend #2) I heard the song "Honey on the Skin" by Amy Petty and everything just kind of clicked. Amy was kind enough to let me use a bunch of her songs for my book trailers.
When I was writing Tall, Dark, and Vampire I listened to a lot of Evenasence and Guns 'n Roses but the song that made it click for me was Fly to the Angels by Slaughter. I had that song on repeat every time I was on the treadmill and it took me to some fantastic places.
I also create a soundtrack for every book and post it online for my readers. The soundtrack for Tall, Dark, and Vampire is grittier than any of my other books but then again, so are my vampires in New York City.
How about you? What lights your fire?
Dream on...

TALL, DARK, AND VAMPIRE BY SARA HUMPHREYS – IN STORES AUGUST 2013
She always knew Fate was cruel...
The last person Olivia expected to turn up at her club was her one true love. It would normally be great to see him, except he's been dead for centuries. Olivia really thought she had moved on with her immortal life, but as soon as she sees Doug Paxton, she knows she'd rather die than lose him again. And that's a real problem...
But this is beyond the pale...
Doug is a no-nonsense copy by day, but his nights are tormented by dreams of a gorgeous redhead who's so much a part of him, she seems to be in his blood. When he meets Olivia face-to-face, long-buried memories begin to surface. She might be the answer to his prayers...or she might be the dead of him.
